According to the UK-based Collins Dictionary, “vibe coding” — a term reflecting the rise of artificial intelligence — has been chosen as the Word of the Year.

The concept, which translates human language into computer code, is being described as a silent revolution in the world of software development.

The year 2025, marked by rapid advances in AI, has not only transformed technology but also the language we use to describe it.

Collins linguists detected a sharp increase in the use of the term “vibe coding” in their 24-billion-word global database since February.

The dictionary defines vibe coding as “an innovative software development method that converts natural language into computer code.”

“Technology That Makes You Forget Code”

The term vibe coding was first introduced by Andrej Karpathy, former Director of AI at Tesla and one of OpenAI’s founding engineers. Karpathy described it as:

“Artificial intelligence gives people the power to build applications so easily that they’ll forget code ever existed.”

This idea signals a new era in which not only engineers but also ordinary users can create digital products without writing a single line of code.

In 2024, Collins chose “Brat” as the Word of the Year — inspired by Charli XCX’s album of the same name.Brat describes a “confident, unapologetic, and rebellious individual” and was seen as a reflection of the youth culture spirit of the time.
