Rising jet fuel costs have led to a sharp increase in airfares, while airspace closures have resulted in substantial reductions to flight schedules.
Flights that are still operating are being forced to take longer routes to avoid conflict zones, leading to extended travel times, increased fuel consumption, and higher emissions.
Even if tensions ease, ticket prices are expected to remain elevated through the summer months.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has advised avoiding air travel where alternative options are available. It has also called on countries to promote public transportation, car-sharing, and fuel-efficient driving practices, as well as to reduce highway speed limits by at least 10 km/h to conserve fuel.
Additionally, to reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption, the use of license plate rotation systems has been recommended in major cities to restrict private vehicle access on certain days.
