The European Union has rejected the 28-point proposal drafted by the United States for Ukraine, calling it a “preliminary draft” that must be revised to include Europe’s own demands.
Leaders including the German Chancellor, the UK Prime Minister, and the French President have voiced concerns over the plan, which envisions Ukraine giving up sovereignty, ceding territory, and downsizing its military as part of a settlement with Russia.
The challenge for European leaders now is to present an alternative plan without provoking the anger of President Donald Trump, who is pushing for a swift agreement.
