The Croatian Parliament has voted to reinstate mandatory military service, marking a significant policy shift amid rising tensions in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In the 151-member parliament, the proposal passed with 84 votes in favor, 11 against, and 30 abstentions.

According to public broadcaster HRT, the service will last two months and provide citizens with basic military training.

This decision represents a return to conscription after it was suspended in 2008, when Croatia adopted a volunteer-based system.
