Hamburg’s goal to become climate-neutral has been moved forward from 2045 to 2040, prompting discussions of radical measures such as driving bans and a widespread 30 km/h speed limit.
Experts warn that slowing down traffic could have negative impacts on both the tourism and logistics industries — two key pillars of the city’s economy.
Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt, Board Member of the Federal Association of Freight Transport and Logistics (BGL), emphasized Hamburg’s national importance, stating:
“Hamburg holds unique significance for Germany as a central bottleneck in the supply of goods, the economy, and traffic with Scandinavian countries.”
As Germany’s most important port city, Hamburg plays a vital role in the nation’s supply chain and in maintaining its logistical connections with Northern Europe.
