The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on major Russian energy giants for the first time, citing Moscow’s “failure to demonstrate a serious commitment to a peace process that would end the war in Ukraine.”

The sanctions target Rosneft and Lukoil, Russia’s two largest oil companies. Rosneft has already been blacklisted by the European bloc as well.

The move came shortly after the White House canceled a planned summit between Trump and Putin in Budapest, following concerns that Russia’s “extremist stance” had not changed.

Trump stated, “We canceled the meeting with President Putin. It just didn’t feel right to me.”
