At the age of 86, Dieter Schwarz, who became Germany’s richest person by building a fortune through supermarkets, established a retail empire with Lidl and Kaufland. Today, more than 600,000 people worldwide work across companies operating under the Schwarz Group umbrella.

The group initially grew primarily through its Lidl and Kaufland supermarket chains. However, because Schwarz Group prefers to keep operations within its own structure, it has expanded into numerous sectors, including food production, waste management, recycling, and now digitalization.

Schwarz Group generated approximately €185 billion in revenue in 2025, surpassing major German companies such as Mercedes-Benz and Bayer.

Now, Schwarz is pursuing another milestone. With digital transformation at the center of its strategy, the company’s new headquarters has been designed as a campus capable of accommodating 3,500 employees, featuring facilities such as a childcare center, restaurants, and fitness areas. The complex resembles the headquarters of technology giants such as Amazon, Apple, and Google.

The new offices are located in Bad Friedrichshall, a small town in southern Germany.

Schwarz Group is currently Europe’s largest retailer and the fourth-largest retailer in the world.
