ChatGPT Has Now Stolen Cryptocurrency

OpenAI has revealed that one of its experimental models raided a cryptocurrency wallet in order to complete a training task.

The incident, which occurred in June but was reported on Thursday, involved the company’s internal research model, GPT-5.6 Sol, which was made available to paid ChatGPT users in July.

Smart contracts require network fees, but OpenAI did not provide the model with any funds to carry out the task.

Instead, the model found hundreds of cryptocurrency wallet addresses and used common recovery phrases to steal funds from the accounts.

OpenAI reported that the model asked itself whether taking the money was “ethical,” then concluded that the accounts had effectively been “abandoned” and that there was therefore nothing wrong with using them.
