Europe Dries Up as Trade Grinds to a Halt

Water levels in the Rhine, Danube and Po, among Europe’s busiest waterways, stretching across dozens of countries, have fallen to record lows in Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary and Italy.
Cargo ships are being forced to navigate around sandbanks formed by climate change. To prevent vessels from running aground or being damaged, some ships are operating with their loads reduced to as little as 20% of their normal capacity.
The major rivers that run across Europe play a crucial role in transportation, industry and agriculture.
The sharp decline in water levels has raised concerns over restrictions on navigation and river traffic, as well as the potential economic consequences.
Experts warn that the situation could have far more critical economic consequences in the future if water levels continue to fall.
