On the 65th anniversary of Turkish migration to Germany, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised Turkish migrants and thanked them for their contributions to the country.

Speaking at a ceremony in Berlin, Merz said that Turkish migrants who came to Germany under the “Guest Worker Agreement” had helped build the foundations of the country’s industrial sector and laid the groundwork for its current prosperity, describing their contribution as a “success story.”

Merz criticized the fact that first-, second- and even third-generation Turkish Germans continue to be treated as foreigners despite all their efforts. He also pointed out that fear of foreigners is being exploited for ideological purposes today.

Criticizing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s plans for “remigration,” Friedrich Merz made a striking remark:

“Behind this lies an attack on the modern Germany that we have built together over the past 65 years.”
