Elif Eralp Victory in Berlin: Die Linke Emerges as the Strongest Party

Elif Eralp has achieved a historic electoral breakthrough in Berlin. Her victory was celebrated with traditional festivities, including people dancing the halay. The Turkish-German politician could become Berlin’s first female governing mayor with a migration background.

Eralp led Die Linke (The Left) to a major electoral breakthrough in Berlin. The party, which had previously been a relatively weak political force in the city, emerged as the strongest party with around 25.7% of the vote.

Following the result, Eralp said:

“From today on, we will change Berlin together and make it a better place. Voters have shown that they have hope for a better and more livable Berlin where people can live with dignity.”

Continuing her victory speech, Eralp said:

“Today, love and justice have prevailed over hatred in our city. We showed this together today, and this message is spreading throughout the world.”

The result marks a major breakthrough for Die Linke. Eralp, the daughter of Turkish immigrants, has now emerged as a leading contender to become Berlin’s next Governing Mayor.

According to the final results, Die Linke won 25.7%, ahead of the CDU at 18.8%, the AfD at 16.3%, the Greens at 14.3% and the SPD at 12.1%.

Compared with the 2023 election, Die Linke increased its share of the vote by roughly 13 percentage points, while the traditional governing parties suffered significant losses. The AfD also increased its vote share.

The projected distribution of seats in Berlin’s 159-member House of Representatives means that no single party has an absolute majority, making coalition negotiations necessary.

Die Linke is now expected to explore coalition options, with the SPD and Greens among the parties that could potentially form a governing coalition with Eralp’s party.

Eralp has campaigned on issues including affordable housing, rent regulation and greater public control of housing, making the housing crisis one of the central themes of her political platform.

The election result represents a major political shift in Berlin and puts Elif Eralp in a position to potentially become the capital’s next Governing Mayor.
