Ahead of their talks, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky appeared relaxed before the press, sidestepping tough questions and often responding with vague or unrelated answers.
The main point of contention during the press briefing was over a “ceasefire.” Zelensky emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, while Trump dismissed the idea, insisting: “It shouldn’t be a ceasefire, it should be peace.” Trump argued that negotiations to end the conflict do not require a ceasefire.
Zelensky requested U.S. security guarantees, though without a clear framework. Trump, without giving specifics, stated that the U.S. would be part of providing security assurances to Ukraine as part of any future peace agreement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, reacting to the meeting, said he expected a call afterwards. Trump confirmed, saying: “I will call Putin after the meeting.” Both Trump and Zelensky also expressed support for the possibility of future three-way talks including Putin.
Talks then moved behind closed doors.
The most unresolved issue remains Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. Despite backing from European leaders, it is uncertain how long Zelensky can resist mounting pressure over potential territorial concessions, particularly regarding Donbas and Luhansk, which Russia continues to demand.
