The UK is closing its doors to foreign workers who do not hold a university-level qualification. And that’s not all. To be eligible for a work visa, there must also be strong evidence of critical shortages in strategic sectors. Even when both conditions are met, any granted work visa will come with time limits—meaning workers will have to return to their home countries once the period ends.
This move is part of the UK’s broader effort to reduce net migration.
Under the new plan, the standard skilled worker visa threshold will apply only to roles classified under "regulated qualifications framework level 6" (RQF 6), which corresponds to undergraduate education.
According to the Home Office’s proposal, individuals with jobs below RQF 6 will only be allowed entry on a "temporary basis" and only if "strong evidence of shortages critical to sectoral strategy" is presented.
