Germany’s new coalition government, formed by the CDU/CSU and SPD, is ending the “three-year fast-track citizenship” policy introduced by the previous administration.
The model, which came into force in mid-2023, allowed naturalization after a minimum of three years of residence, provided applicants had a stable income, a clean criminal record, C1-level German proficiency, and a demonstrated commitment to democratic values.
Fulfilling a key CDU/CSU election promise, the coalition persuaded its partner SPD to scrap the measure.
However, the 2024 reform that reduced the standard naturalization period from eight to five years and allowed dual citizenship will remain in place.
