U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a harsh attack on climate activist Greta Thunberg, calling her “a troublemaker with anger issues who should see a doctor.”

“She’s just a troublemaker. So, is she not into the environment anymore? She’s got serious anger management problems — I think she needs to see a doctor. If you’ve watched her, she’s very angry, very crazy for such a young person,” Trump said.

The U.S. president’s words about the 22-year-old activist have been widely criticized as unusually severe. But what’s behind Trump’s apparent hostility toward the young environmentalist?

To understand the tension, one has to look back to 2019.

On September 23, 2019, Greta Thunberg delivered her now-famous speech at the United Nations General Assembly:

“We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”

Trump, then serving his first term as president, was in the audience — and later mocked Thunberg’s speech on X (then Twitter), writing:

“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”

The comment drew widespread backlash, with many accusing Trump of mocking a 16-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome.

Now, years later, Thunberg is once again in the global spotlight as part of the Sumud Flotilla, a pro-Palestinian initiative challenging Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. She has previously been detained by Israeli security forces and reported experiencing harsh and demeaning treatment during those encounters.
