The announcement of the meeting came just hours after Trump signaled that Ukraine might have to give up territory to end the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.
Trump said he expected “some land swaps” between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking at the White House, Trump stated:
“It’s very complicated. We will take some back, and we will swap some. Certain areas will be exchanged in a way that will benefit both.”
Would it be correct to read this as follows? Ukraine has agreed to hand over the vast territories it lost in the war to Russia.
Sources indicate that the territories to be given to Russia include the entire Donbas region in Ukraine and Crimea. Under the proposed deal, Russia might give up the partially occupied Kherson and Zaporizhia regions.
There has been no response yet from Ukraine to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously rejected any preconditions involving territorial concessions in the strongest terms.
BBC’s Note:
Despite occupying about 20% of Ukrainian territory, Moscow has failed to make decisive progress in its full-scale invasion. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s offensives have not succeeded in pushing Russian forces back.
