Uranium Contamination in Drinking Water Triggers State of Emergency in Greece

In the northern city of Serres, a state of emergency has been declared in three residential areas due to the detection of dangerous levels of uranium in the drinking water.

The decision to declare a state of emergency for the areas of Serres, Lefkonas, and Kristos was made by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and aims to facilitate efforts in addressing the uranium contamination issue in the water supply.

The state of emergency, initiated at the request of Serres Mayor Varvara Bitlianga, will remain in effect until June 26.

This measure will allow relevant municipalities and institutions access to financial tools designated for emergency situations and accelerate efforts to resolve the problem while supporting residents.

Inspections conducted last week in Serres revealed hazardous levels of uranium in the drinking water, leading to a ban on the use of water for drinking and cooking purposes in five localities.
