Sweden is trying to tackle its migrant integration problem by offering thousands of euros to migrants willing to return home.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, stressing the need to control integration, backed a proposal to raise return grants from €900 to €32,000.
“There is an absolute need to control immigration,” Kristersson said, reiterating the government's plan to significantly increase the financial incentives for migrants to leave the country.“
Currently, the grant stands at €900 per adult. However, the initiative has seen limited success so far. According to the Swedish Migration Agency, only one out of 70 applications was approved in 2023.
To reverse this trend, the new government has proposed a 3,400% increase, raising the amount to €32,000.The measure is expected to take effect on January 1, 2026.
