Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) claims to have uncovered, for the first time, a spy network allegedly operating on behalf of the Hungarian state to gather intelligence on Ukraine’s defense. Two suspects were reportedly detained and arrested on charges of "high treason."

According to Ukrainian intelligence, the individuals were recruited by an agent working for Hungarian military intelligence. They were provided with cash and special equipment for secure communication. The agents were instructed to relay information about Ukraine’s air defense systems and military capacities in the Transcarpathia region, near the Hungarian border.

The Hungarian government has yet to respond to the allegations.

Although Hungary is a member of both the European Union and NATO—organizations closely cooperating with Ukraine in the war—Prime Minister Viktor Orbán remains skeptical of Western military support to Ukraine and continues to maintain relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Roughly 150,000 ethnic Hungarians live in Ukraine, the majority in the Transcarpathia region. The governments of Kyiv and Budapest have frequently clashed in the past over language rights for this community.
