A 51-year-old tourist was caught red-handed while attempting to steal priceless artifacts from Pompeii, one of Italy’s and the world’s most treasured heritage sites.
The man was visiting the archaeological site in the evening when he bent down and placed five fragments of ancient stones and a brick into his bag.
He was reported by a guide and intercepted by police. The tourist admitted he intended to gift the items to his son for his personal collection but claimed he did not know removing artifacts from the site was illegal.
He now faces a €1,500 fine and up to six years in prison on charges of aggravated theft.
