For the first time since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, a NATO country has directly engaged Russian assets in its own airspace.
The Polish Armed Forces confirmed that Russian drones were “shot down” after violating Polish airspace.
Officials said Polish and NATO aircraft launched operations early Wednesday morning in response to the incursion.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was near the area of operations, posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“An operation is underway concerning multiple violations of Polish airspace.”
The Russian drone attack marks a new dimension for both Poland and NATO.
As a precaution, Poland closed four airports shortly after the first reports of drones emerged.
