Germany has turned back 10,000 illegal (undocumented) migrants at the border.
Under the coalition government led by Friedrich Merz, Germany is taking tough measures against illegal migration, sharply criticizing the migration policies of the Merkel era, with Merz stating, “If it were today, I would do it again.”
CDU Chairman and Chancellor Friedrich Merz clearly outlined the shift in migration policy:
"We are seriously implementing what we call return in migration. Combating illegal migration is a government priority."
Merz claimed that the measures taken have been effective and noted that border controls have been tightened since he assumed office:
"More than 10,000 illegal migrants have been turned back. The main goal is to end illegal migration and return to a regulated migration policy."
He described the decline in asylum applications as “a major success of this government.”
Actions Taken:
📌 A group of migrants involved in crimes were deported to Afghanistan.
📌 New deportation flights to Afghanistan and Syria have been planned.
📌 Family reunification rights for refugees with limited protection status have been suspended.
📌 The government worked closely with neighboring countries in Europe.
📌 Support was given to the planned EU-wide asylum policy reform (Geas reform).
Merz emphasized that this support does not change Germany’s identity as a migration country: “We are a migration country and will remain so.”
CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann added that the message “Germany does not accept everyone” has reduced illegal migration by 20% in Europe and 50% in Germany.
It appears that internal border controls in Germany will continue until Europe’s external borders are fully secured.
