German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the country will face a major test in terms of freedom, economy, and social unity.

Merz stressed that Germany will confront profound changes in the coming autumn, calling on citizens to be prepared.

During the Bundestag’s general debate on the 2025 budget, the Chancellor delivered what may be one of the most critical messages in Germany’s recent history:

“This autumn, decisions of historic importance will be made for our country. These are not just technical details but questions of fundamental direction.”

Merz outlined three key challenges facing Germany: Security, Economy, and Social Unity.

  1. Freedom under threat – Military force, hybrid threats, and attacks on democracy are undermining Germany’s core values of liberty.

  2. Growing economic pressures – Rising energy costs, protectionist tendencies, and structural pressures brought on by digital transformation are straining Germany’s economic model.

  3. Risk of social cohesion unraveling – Both internal polarization and external influences threaten the sense of unity within society.

The Chancellor posed a series of questions to the public:

  • “What kind of country does Germany want to remain?”

  • “How will we work, how will we live together, and which values will we preserve?”

Merz declared that the government would act with determination to protect freedoms, restore prosperity, and strengthen social cohesion.

Following Merz’s call for the public to “be ready this autumn,” all eyes are now on what challenges and changes await Germany and those living in the country.
