Following the U.S.’s direct intervention in the Israel-Iran war by striking three Iranian nuclear facilities, the Iranian Parliament has approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The final decision, however, will rest with national security authorities.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters:
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow chokepoint at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, acting as a key maritime corridor for the export of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Middle East to global markets via the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.
One-third of the world’s seaborne oil passes through the strait.
It is essential for major producers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE to ship crude oil and condensate.
Roughly 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products per day flow through the strait, primarily to Asian markets, especially China.
Around 20% of global LNG trade also depends on this passage.
Any closure of the Strait of Hormuz would likely lead to a dramatic surge in global oil and LNG prices, sending shockwaves through international energy markets.
