In 2025, peace may feel like a rare commodity. Global wars are escalating, border security is tightening, and trade tensions continue to rise.
According to the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), the number of state-based conflicts has reached its highest level since World War II, with three more conflicts emerging this year alone. Many countries are responding with increased militarization.
The Institute for Economics and Peace tracks 23 indicators, ranging from external conflicts and military expenditures to security measures such as terrorism and homicide.
1. Iceland
Iceland, ranked number one since 2008, continues to be the world’s most peaceful country, leading in security, ongoing conflicts, and militarization. This year, it improved by 2%, further widening the gap with the country in second place.
For locals, this sense of security is part of everyday life.
2. Ireland
Although Ireland struggled with conflicts in the late 20th century, today it continues to prioritize peace. It scored highly for year-on-year reductions in militarization and is ranked among the countries with the least internal and international conflicts. Additionally, it is in the top 10 for social safety and public order, thanks to low crime and violence perceptions.
People here look out for one another. It is a place where you can ask a stranger for help, and they will do their best for you. This sense of community is widespread among residents.
Ireland’s natural beauty, combined with a sense of peace and security, and its relaxed lifestyle, also provides a feeling of comfort and calm.
3. New Zealand
This year, New Zealand rose two places to rank third, thanks to improvements in safety and public order, and fewer impacts from protests and terrorism.
As a Pacific island nation, New Zealand’s geography provides natural protection from external conflicts, while domestic policies give residents a sense of tranquility. Its safe and slower-paced lifestyle makes it a welcoming destination for travelers.
4. Austria
Austria dropped one place to fourth this year but still ranks highly in all areas. Like Ireland, Austria adopts a constitutionally mandated neutrality policy, preventing participation in military alliances such as NATO. This allows the country to focus its attention and resources internally.
5. Singapore
The safest country in Asia, Singapore is known for its security, efficiency, and order. The absence of ongoing conflicts and internal insecurity gives most residents a strong sense of safety.
