A first-of-its-kind study has revealed how OpenAI’s hugely popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is actually being used.

An analysis of 1.5 million conversations showed that most activity revolves around “daily tasks that create economic value through both personal and professional use.”

Three-quarters of all chats focused on practical knowledge, information seeking, and writing. Writing was the most common work-related task, while coding and self-expression remained niche activities.

Researchers found that most people use ChatGPT for non-work purposes, with only 30% employing it for professional tasks. The faster growth of non-work usage suggests that the well-being benefits of generative AI could reach significant levels. In professional contexts, users appear to gain value not only by having ChatGPT directly complete tasks, but also by using it as a consultant or research assistant.

One unexpected finding was that men and women tend to use ChatGPT for different reasons. Users with typically female names leaned toward “practical knowledge and writing support,” while those with typically male names used it more for “technical help and multimedia.”
