Historic Offer from the European Union to Canada: First Associate Member

Canada has been invited to become the European Union’s first associate member.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that Canada had been invited to join the European Union as an “associate member.”

The EU and Ottawa are seeking to establish a deeper partnership in areas including technology, defense, the Arctic and energy.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola went even further, suggesting that countries such as Australia and New Zealand, along with other like-minded nations seeking closer ties with the European Union, could potentially follow Canada and pursue “associate membership” of the EU.
