Elif Eralp Appears Set to Become Governing Mayor!
Eralp said, “We have resolved the misunderstanding with the SPD and the Greens.”
Elif Eralp, the Left Party’s candidate for Governing Mayor, whose party won the Berlin state election held on September 20, 25 days ago, with 26% of the vote but was unable to form a government on its own, announced that the “misunderstandings” that had led to the suspension of preliminary talks on a coalition government with the Social Democrats and the Greens had been resolved. She said preliminary talks aimed at forming a coalition government would continue.
The SPD and the Greens had suspended the preliminary talks to assess whether the agreement was still valid, after noting that a statement on combating antisemitism adopted by the Left Party’s parliamentary group in the state parliament last week did not align with the text agreed upon by the three parties following lengthy negotiations.
If the Left Party, the Greens and the SPD form a government, the text reflecting their shared position on combating antisemitism will be included in the coalition agreement.
