A new index has ranked the European countries where your vehicle is most likely to break down—and pinpointed the roads where drivers face the greatest danger.
Here are the top “blacklisted” roads in Europe:
🇷🇴 Romania – Transfăgărășan Highway
Breakdown Risk Score: 98.3 (highest in Europe)This winding 151-km mountain road, known as DN7, links Transylvania and Wallachia. Famous for its stunning views, it is also notorious for landslides, floods, and falling rocks—making it arguably Europe’s most dangerous route.
🇭🇺 Hungary – M1 Motorway
Breakdown Risk Score: 91.9Stretching between Budapest and Vienna, the M1 is one of Hungary’s busiest highways. It also suffers from high accident rates, putting it near the top of the danger list for Central Europe.
🇬🇷 Greece – Katara Pass
Breakdown Risk Score: 77.96Connecting Thessaly and Epirus, the Katara Pass (meaning “cursed” in Greek) climbs to 1,705 meters above sea level. With narrow roads, sharp turns, and hazardous winter conditions, it’s dubbed one of Europe’s most terrifying high-altitude drives. Avoid it—especially in old or poorly maintained vehicles.
🇮🇹 Italy – Stelvio Pass
Breakdown Risk Score: 70.96At over 2,700 meters high and 49 kilometers long, the Stelvio Pass features hairpin bends and dramatic altitude shifts. It’s one of Italy’s most iconic roads—but also one of its most dangerous, particularly for less experienced drivers.
