A German couple was vacationing in northern Italy’s Piedmont region, staying in their camper near the Valla River.
When heavy overnight rain caused the river to rise suddenly, the campsite was quickly submerged. The couple left their vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. During the chaos, however, the woman lost her footing and was swept away by the current.
Helicopters, drones, and diving teams have been deployed in the search, which continues both on land and from the air, but so far no positive outcome has been reported.
The woman’s husband and their dog were unharmed by the flooding.
