Following the Iberian Peninsula, a large-scale power outage in the Czech Republic has caused panic:

Public transportation came to a standstill — metros and trains stopped, passengers were stranded, factories shut down, refineries halted operations, many people were trapped in elevators, and generators were activated in hospitals.

The Prague Transport Authority announced that the entire metro network was brought to a halt around midday.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated that the outage affected other parts of the country as well, adding: “We are facing an extraordinary and troubling situation. Our priority is to restore electricity supply.”

Minister of Industry and Trade Lukas Vlcek said the problem most likely stemmed from a “mechanical failure.”

The exact cause was not immediately clear, but authorities ruled out a cyberattack.

In April, Spain and Portugal had experienced a similar outage due to insufficient voltage control capacity. That incident led to grid collapse, service interruptions, and public panic.
