Did U.S. President Donald Trump get what he wanted in Greenland?

In a post on his Truth Social account on Friday, Trump said:

“I am pleased to announce that the United States has reached an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland that provides for enduring control over the security of Greenland.”

Trump’s statement came as a surprise after he had repeatedly demanded that Denmark hand over Greenland following his return to the presidency. He had previously refused to rule out the use of force, describing Greenland as a matter of vital “national security” for the United States and arguing that China or Russia could move into the region if Washington did not act.

The announcement came at a time when many had assumed the issue had faded from the political agenda.

International media subsequently reported the development as an agreement between the United States and Denmark over Greenland’s security.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who had previously responded strongly to Trump’s demands and said Denmark would “resist,” described the agreement as “a major agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States.”

Frederiksen said the agreement would recognize “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.”

She added:

“This is an agreement that strengthens our common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic region and is therefore of great importance to both NATO and Europe.”

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also welcomed the agreement, saying it was “in everyone’s interest” and would “ensure and strengthen” the security of the island.

Trump, meanwhile, said:

“From now on, no adversary of the United States will be able to establish a base, maintain a military presence or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our explicit written approval.”

The agreement is expected to be signed next week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The statements indicate that the agreement concerns security and strategic access to Greenland rather than a transfer of sovereignty to the United States. Denmark and Greenland have emphasized the continued sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.
