The world-famous city of Bruges in Belgium, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is calling on tourists to stop stealing the cobblestones from its historic center.
Belgium’s tourism brand issued a warning to holidaymakers that cobblestones are not souvenirs, while City Council member Franky Demon stated that between 50 and 70 cobblestones go missing each month due to visitors, with repair costs reaching about 200 euros per square meter.
"We’re only asking for respect. Walking in Bruges means walking on centuries of history. Please leave these stones where they belong."
Local sites such as Minnewater, Vismarkt, Grand Place, and the Gruuthuse Museum are rapidly losing their cobblestones.
The removal of cobblestones poses a clear safety risk for both residents and visitors. Missing or loosened stones create tripping hazards, and frequent assignments are needed to carry out repairs.
