This summer in Italy, empty beaches and high prices have made headlines. Industry groups report a significant decline in visitor numbers, but managers and associations disagree on the real causes.
Sector groups estimate that the total number of visitors has dropped by up to 30% compared to last summer. However, for operators, the situation is more complex than the figures alone suggest.
They argue that the problem is not rising prices. Since 2012, average increases have been around 20%, which they consider modest when compared to post-COVID inflation affecting the overall economy.
