The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that operations against illegal groups have been completed and that army units have begun to withdraw from Sweida.

Syrian leader Shar'a made his first televised statement following Israeli attacks triggered by sectarian violence, pledging to protect the Druze.

Stating that government forces had expelled “illegal groups” from the city of Sweida, Shar'a emphasized that the government is “willing to hold accountable those who committed crimes and mistreated our Druze people.”

Ahmed al-Shar'a also said that Syrians are not afraid of war.

Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier announced that Israel had “taken action to save the Druze and eliminate the regime’s gangs.”

Israeli warplanes heavily bombed the Syrian General Staff headquarters in Damascus and areas near the Presidential Palace.

What had happened?

On Sunday, sectarian clashes erupted between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes in the province, resulting in the deaths of more than 350 people.

The Druze religion, with its unique identity and beliefs, is a branch of Shia Islam. In addition to Syria, there are significant Druze communities in Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
