Donald Trump’s anticipated national address from the White House drew significant attention.
Trump stated that the United States would deliver an “extremely severe” strike against Iran within the next two to three weeks.
“Tonight, I would like to note that we are approaching the completion of key strategic objectives (in Iran). The United States is on track to fulfill all of its military goals in a very short time; however, in the next two to three weeks, we will deliver a very severe blow to them,” he said.
Trump also called on allies to “find the courage” to ensure the safety of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, while arguing that the United States does not require such assistance.
The speech largely repeated statements he had made in recent days and left key questions unanswered.
Global markets were not reassured by the president’s remarks. Oil prices surged to $106 per barrel, while stocks in Asia declined.
In response to Trump’s harsh message, a spokesperson for the Iranian military warned of imminent “crushing, broader, and more destructive” attacks.
