The EU has put the visa card on the table

The European Commission has presented a five-year migration strategy that includes encouraging non-EU countries to cooperate in keeping irregular migrants outside the European Union.
The proposals include strengthening the bloc’s partnership framework with third countries and using visa access, trade, and financial assistance as leverage to pressure foreign governments to readmit their citizens and halt illegal migration to Europe.
This will also involve improving the EU’s visa suspension mechanism for countries that do not cooperate sufficiently with the bloc’s border policies.
As the EU adopts new decisions to prevent illegal migration to Europe, the recent decision by the Spain government to grant the right to remain to approximately 500,000 irregular migrants has sparked serious debate across Europe.
