German authorities have launched a terrorism investigation into the major power outage that struck Berlin earlier this month.

On 3 January, an arson attack on high-voltage power lines—claimed by far-left extremists—cut electricity to around 45,000 households in the German capital. Officials confirmed that the incident is being investigated under charges including membership in a terrorist organization, sabotage, arson, and disruption of public services. The attack has been attributed to the group known as the “Vulkan Group.”

As a result of the blackout, several hundred residents were evacuated from 74 care homes. The German Armed Forces were deployed to assist police and fire services with logistics and emergency operations.

Berlin authorities introduced a series of emergency measures, including the installation of public shower facilities at three swimming pools, the establishment of food distribution centers providing hot meals, and the deployment of charging buses to allow residents to warm up and recharge electronic devices.

S-Bahn services to Mexikoplatz, Nikolassee, and Wannsee stations have since resumed.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner stated that the government will reimburse accommodation costs in full and retroactively for affected residents, provided they submit hotel invoices along with proof of address and identity.
