A New Flashpoint as Peace Talks Loom?
Major General Fanil Sarvarov, Head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff, was assassinated in Moscow after an explosive device planted in a vehicle detonated.
It has been alleged that the attack was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence.
Sarvarov previously took part in operations during the Ossetian–Ingush conflict in the Prigorodny District and served in Syria.
A recipient of multiple state awards, Sarvarov had held the position of Head of the General Staff’s Operational Training Directorate since 2016.
