Large parts of southwest Berlin have been plunged into darkness since Saturday following an arson attack that caused a major power outage. The far-left group Vulkangruppe (Volcano Group) has claimed responsibility for sabotaging power cables, a claim police described as “credible.”
As a result of the outage, tens of thousands of residents have been left without electricity amid harsh winter conditions. Heating systems failed in residential buildings, hospitals and schools, leaving people exposed to freezing temperatures.
Classes at 19 schools in Berlin have been suspended until Thursday. Care facilities and hospitals have also been severely affected by the blackout, with patients transferred to other hospitals by ambulance.
Around 45,000 households and more than 2,000 commercial customers are still not reconnected to the power grid. The widespread outage has reportedly caused significant financial damage to businesses.
In a statement titled “Only Courage,” published by Bild newspaper, Vulkangruppe said: “The target of the action was not power outages, but the fossil energy economy.”
