Is Europe turning back to nuclear energy?

Facing a new energy shock, Europe is questioning whether reviving nuclear power could be part of the solution.

Across the continent, households and industries are watching with growing concern as fuel prices and the cost of refuelling vehicles rise rapidly.

The EU’s executive body, the European Commission, has urged people to work from home more and travel significantly less.

Policymakers warn that the situation could deteriorate further depending on developments in the Middle East. Yet it feels like only yesterday that Europeans were grappling with a cost-of-living crisis driven by soaring energy prices and inflation following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This has led discussions across Europe to (once again) shift toward the issue of energy independence.

Nuclear power now appears to be back in favour, both in the United Kingdom and across the European Union, as part of a domestically sourced energy mix.

However, questions remain over how quickly nuclear energy can provide a solution, and just how safe and reliable it truly is.
