Fireworks launched into the sky at midnight on New Year’s Eve have long been a deeply rooted tradition in Germany. However, the practice has come under growing criticism in recent years due to severe injuries, including amputated fingers and hands, and even fatalities.
On last New Year’s Eve alone, five people lost their lives in Germany as a result of fireworks or accidental explosions, while hundreds more were injured.
In the aftermath of these deaths and the incidents that unfolded that night, numerous organizations and officials called for a ban on illegal fireworks and explosive devices.
Despite petitions, repeated appeals, and thousands of signatures collected, a nationwide ban on fireworks has not yet been implemented.
