Every Shipment Will Now Be Subject to Customs Checks

Low-cost online shopping from outside the European Union is set to become significantly more expensive. The EU has decided to abolish the current €150 duty-free import threshold. Under the new rules, every product—regardless of its value—will be subject to customs procedures.

Chinese platforms such as Temu, Shein, and AliExpress reportedly misdeclare or undervalue around 65% of shipments, allowing them to bypass customs duties.

The legislative change is expected to come into full effect in 2028, with a transition period beginning in 2026. The EU is also considering a fixed fee of up to €2 per package.

The new system aims to ensure fair competition for all sellers operating in the European market.
