Samet Yılmaz of the Green Party has won the mayoral election in Kiel, the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Yılmaz secured 54.1% of the vote, defeating Gerrit Derkowski — the candidate backed by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) who received 45.9%.

Born in Kiel, Samet Yılmaz studied political science at Kiel University (CAU), where he later completed his doctorate.

In the first round of voting on November 16, no candidate surpassed the 50% threshold. Gerrit Derkowski led with 28.7%, followed by Yılmaz with 24.8%.

With a roughly 5-point margin in the runoff, Samet Yılmaz becomes Germany’s second mayor of Turkish origin, following Hanover’s mayor Belit Onay.
